What are the responsibilities of a Marine Surveyor?

As a purchaser you need to know the condition and approximate fair market value of your proposed acquisition. If you are new to yachting, is this the correct yacht for you?

Discuss with the surveyor your budget for the yacht concerned, you may be aware of certain declared faults already and have budgeted for repairs.

What do you want your surveyor to do if during his survey, he finds several more problems and is only half way through his survey? If you have had a useful discussion with your surveyor prior to survey he will know your expectations and chosen expenditure limits for the yacht. It would not be the first time, nor will it be the last time that we have contacted a client during survey when major defects have shown up. At this point the surveyor has a responsibility to his client. If he feels the yacht is not meeting the expectations of his client there must be a telephone conversation to decide upon completing or abandoning the survey, if abandoned Alexander Surveys will normally reduce the survey fee by up to 50%. In addition to giving confidence in the surveyor, this also ensures that survey fees are reduced to limit the capitol expenditure during the search for the ideal yacht.

Most insurance companies and banks will require a current survey on older vessels in order to underwrite and/or finance the vessel, it is the surveyor’s responsibility to ensure that a full and accurate survey is completed and finally, the most important reason to survey the vessel is for your safety and the safety of your family, crew and guests.
